He was associated with many banking institution in Ohio and served as director of Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. In 1900, C.M. was appointed Quartermaster General of Ohio by Gov. Nash. He became known as General Spitzer thereafter.

C.M. built Innisfail,  an imposing colonial revival mansion on Collingwood Blvd. It housed his art collection in the largest private art gallery in the city. It was razed in the 1960's to build Executive Towers, an apartment building. The Spitzer families built the largest private mausoleum in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Each cousin has an entrance to their respective family crypts.
