Grand Army of the Republic Monument
Dedicated in 1901
Memorializing 340 Civil War Veterans Buried in Woodlawn
The Grand Army of the Republic was the association of Civil War Union Army veterans. There are 340 Civil War veterans buried at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
This was Lucas County's tribute to honor the Civil War veterans. The 65 ft. monument weighs 32,000 pounds. One hundred ninety-five Civil War soldiers are buried in the formation of a five pointed star --to represent the G.A.R. medal. Many living veterans were present to honor their comrades at the dedication ceremony.
