Solon T. Klotz

(1866-1948)

Toledo Mayor

Klotz served as a Toledo postal clerk, lawyer, and local leader of the Socialist Party. He was elected mayor (1934-1935) on the Socialist ticket. Recall petitions were circulated six months after he became mayor. Voters then chose to amend the city charter to provide for a council-manager form of city government.

In his younger years, he was a musician, soldier, sailor, lecturer and university teacher. He had served five years with The Ohio National Guard, then quit to travel as "The Boy Wonder Musician" of a circus.
