Working for the DeVilbiss Co., he perfected the spray gun for painting automobiles and furniture and invented the perfumizer. Son of Dr. Allen DeVillbiss Sr., Thomas DeVilbiss held many patents.

He was an active civic leader and member of the Toledo Board of Education. Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School (1931-1991) was named in his honor. He was the major donor for Camp Miakonda, officially named DeVilbiss Scout Reservation in his honor.
